Antônio Carlos Jobim, in full Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida, byname Tom Jobim, (born January 25, 1927, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil—died December 8, 1994, New York, New York, U.S.), Brazilian songwriter, composer, and arranger who transformed the extroverted rhythms of the Brazilian samba into an intimatemusic, the bossa nova (“new trend”), which became internationally popular in the 1960s.
