Description
Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 American comedy-drama film directed by Jon Avnetand based on Fannie Flagg‘s 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. Written by Flagg and Carol Sobieski, and starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker and Cicely Tyson, the film tells the story of a middle-aged housewife who, unhappy with her life, befriends an elderly lady in a nursing home and is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know.
Thomas Newman’s Fried Green Tomatoes balances precariously between lyricism and melodrama–a deeply personal symphonic score textured by the bluesy rhythms of the film’s Depression-era Alabama setting, its creativity tempers its tendencies towards sentimentality. Its strong melodies and bold arrangements notwithstanding, what truly separates Fried Green Tomatoes is Newman’s skillful implementation of Southern accents–for all its orchestral pomp and pageantry, the music bathes in the dust, heat and grime of post-reconstruction Dixieana, complete with slide guitar, barrelhouse piano and the intensely soulful vocals of gospel great Marion Williams.
