Description
In & Out 1997
Marc Shaiman‘s score to the gay-themed farce In & Out suffers from forced whimsy — though a gifted comedic composer with a flair for quirky yet accessible melodies, Shaiman simply goes through the motions here, creating music virtually interchangeable from previous efforts. His most memorable themes eschew comedy altogether — “Mom & Dad” and “Cameron & Emily” capture an appealing tenderness that never succumbs to pure pathos. Shaiman‘s score is fortified by a series of pop smashes positively dripping with campy appeal, among them the Village People‘s “Macho Man” and Ethel Merman‘s “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.”
