Description

Tutto Pavarotti is a two-disc set made up of selections from the tenor’s opera and recital solos from the Decca archive, plus a track from the soundtrack to the 1988 film The Fortunate Pilgrim. The original releases date from 1968 to 1988, a period when Pavarotti was at the height of his vocal powers. The performances exhibit the characteristic, strength, warmth, and passion of his singing. About two-thirds are operatic arias, taken from complete opera recordings or recitals and the rest are songs, mostly post-Romantic Italian pieces like “‘O sole mio.” The operatic excerpts are dominated by Verdi and Rossini, but there are also arias by Donizetti, Ponchielli, Flotow, Bizet, Massenet, Meyerbeer, Boito, Leoncavallo, and Mascagni. Many of Pavarotti‘s most popular solos are here, including “Una furtive lagrima,” “La donna è mobile,” “Vesti la giubba,” E lucevan le stelle,” “Che gelida manina,” and “Nessun dorma,” but he is also exceptionally effective in less familiar pieces like “Quando le sere al placido,” from Verdi‘s Luisa Miller. The sound ambience varies from track to track because of the diverse sources of the recordings, but it is never less than very good.
