Description
Nana Caymmi e César Camargo Mariano: Voz E Suor
This is the CD reissue of the 1983 LP where the great singer is backed exclusively by César Camargo Mariano, and important pianist/arranger for many stars of MPB, including his former wife, the late singer Elis Regina. Mariano shaped his usually vigorous and swinging style to adapt to the needs of Caymmi, a subtle and melancholic singer; there were wonderful results where simplicity meets expressiveness. “Voz e Suor,” a tribute written for Caymmi by Sueli Costa/Abel Silva, is a delicate song about the passing moment. “Velho Piano,” by Nana‘s brother, Dori Caymmi, and the fundamental sambista Paulo César Pinheiro, uses an old piano as an analogy for love. “Fruta Boa” (Milton Nascimento/Fernando Brant) receives an a cappella introduction coherent with the simplicity of the lyrics. Dorival Caymmi is present through “Valerá a Pena” and Tom Jobim/Vinícius de Moraes with “Por Toda Minha Vida.” The longing/meditative mood is broken by a Moraes Moreira samba, “Sede,” which instills vigor and energy in the placid setting. A mark in Caymmi’s career, this album places a winner bet on minimalism, where emotion speaks for itself.
