Barry Manilow (born Barry Alan Pincus; June 17, 1943) is an American singer and songwriter with a career that spans seven decades. His hit recordings include “Could It Be Magic“, “Looks Like We Made It“, “Mandy“, “I Write the Songs“, “Can’t Smile Without You“, “Weekend in New England” and “Copacabana (At the Copa)“.
This four-disc box set is anchored upon Barry’s biggest hits — almost all of which are here, including “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “Copacabana,” “Ships,” “It’s a Miracle,” and “Can’t Smile Without You” — but it digs deeper, offering album tracks and some oddities, including the Showstoppers outtake “Let Freedom Ring” and a duet with Reba McEntire on “Islands in the Stream.” Perhaps this isn’t assembled with the exactitude of a bigger, more expensive box, but at 50 tracks.
Barry Manilow is a one-of-a-kind, wide-ranging musical talent who is impossible to put in any box – with the possible exception of this excellent one. Barry Manilow: The Box Set Series is an altogether loving attempt to capture many of the highlights in one of popular music’s most enduringly successful careers. These 50 songs offer music lovers the perfect chance to remember and rediscover the soundtrack to Barry Manilow’s singular life – and to our own.
