Description
Juice Newton
Juice Newton (born Judith Kay Newton, February 18, 1952, Lakehurst, NJ) was part of the first wave of country singers raised on rock, folk-rock, and singer/songwriters, which is evident from her hit singles. “Angel of the Morning” and “Queen of Hearts,” her two crossover hits, have country-pop arrangements, but their roots are in ’60s pop and new wave roots rock, respectively. That’s why she managed pop crossover hits in the early ’80s and also why she was able to sustain country success throughout the decade.
BGO’s 2012 double-disc set rounds up Juice Newton’s last album with Silver Spur — 1977’s Come to Me — and her two subsequent records, 1978’s Well Kept Secret and 1979’s Take Heart. The albums she released before striking paydirt with 1981’s Juice, in other words. This traces Newton’s transition from country-rocker to soft rock queen. Honestly, she never left the country behind — it underpinned everything — but there’s a hazy ’70s soft rock vibe that flows throughout these three albums, and that’s the primary appeal of the set.
